Fonterra
Fonterra Co-operative Group is a global dairy company involved in large-scale milk procurement, processing and management. Based in New Zealand, the company has a supply chain spanning more than 140 countries. In Australia, Fonterra operates a number of businesses, including Bonlac Foods Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Fonterra, and Fonterra Brands Australia, which produces leading brands such as Western Star, Perfect Italiano, Mainland and Connoisseur.
Milk is collected from dairy farmer suppliers through two milk collection agencies: Fonterra Milk Australia and Bonlac Supply Company (BSC), a dairy co-operative owned by Australian dairy farmers.
Fonterra operates 11 manufacturing sites in Victoria, Western Australia, New South Wales and Tasmania - at Wynyard and Devonport.
Fonterra manufactures a range of products for food manufacturers, food and beverage companies, pharmaceutical companies and FMCG companies. These products include milk powder, butter, liquid milk, cheese, casein, cream, prepared edible fat, buttermilk powder, anhydrous milk fat and lactalbumin.
In Tasmania, Fonterra has approximately 370 suppliers and processes over 60 per cent of the state's milk.
Milk Price Structure:
Payment = milk fat ($/kg) + protein ($/kg) - volume charge (c/L)
Based on daily production and paid the following month (15th).
Base price July to November, higher price December to January.
Incentives for quality and total production.
Fonterra wishes to see sustainable and profitable growth on farms, and currently has the capacity to accommodate increased production.
