Health Services

The health system in Tasmania is a mixture of public and private sector service providers with a range of funding and regulatory mechanisms.

There are three major public hospitals in Tasmania:

  • Royal Hobart Hospital
  • Launceston General Hospital
  • North West Regional Hospital (Burnie & Mersey Devonport) Campus)

Tertiary services are provided in certain locations and include neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, neo-natal intensive care, vascular surgery, specialised paediatric surgery and a severe burns unit.
Secondary hospital services such as general medicine and general surgery, orthopaedic, gynaecological, ear, nose and throat surgery, obstetrics and paediatric services are more widely available statewide.

The Australian Government's contribution to Health services includes three major national subsidy schemes:

Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme

Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) cover all permanent residents and Australian citizens, and subsidise their payments for private medical services and for a high proportion of prescription medicines.

Under Medicare, the Australian and State governments also jointly fund public hospital services so they are provided free of charge to people who choose to be treated as public patients.

Private Health Insurance Rebate Scheme

The Australian Government also provides a 30 per cent rebate and other incentives to support people's choice to take up and retain private health insurance.
