Business Migration
The Australian and Tasmanian governments want to attract business people who have the skills, experience and capital to succeed in the Australian business environment.
Currently, Tasmania's agricultural sector is undergoing a period of expansion and development. In order to fully realise the industry's potential, the Tasmanian Government is seeking to attract business migrants with the capital, knowledge and skills to help fuel the further growth development of the primary production industry.
The Federal Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) controls all immigration to Australia. State governments are responsible for promoting migration to their regions and identifying and sponsoring individual migrants who will benefit their state by settling within its jurisdiction.
Anyone who is not an Australian citizen who wishes to enter Australia on a short term, long term or permanent basis requires a visa. The type of visa an individual should apply for depends on their background and reason for travelling to Australia. The application process for short stay visas is more streamlined - many people visiting briefly (for tourism or business) can apply for an electronic visa either through a travel agent or online.
Applying to migrate is more complex, but if applicants understand the requirements in advance and how to fulfil them, the pathway to permanent residence is straightforward.
It is strongly recommended that anyone wishing to migrate as a business person download Book 7 - Business Skills Entry through the DIMIA website (click on links Online Services Form and Booklets, Migration services) or purchase a hardcopy from the nearest Australian Overseas Mission.
For further details contact the Australian Government Migration website or Tasmanian Department of Economic Development website.
Summary of Requirements
If you are not an Australian or New Zealand citizen and wish to dairy farm in Tasmania you and your dependents will need to apply for migration through the Australian Government's Department of Immigration (DIMA).
While there are a number of migration pathways most migrant farmers settle under Australia's two-stage Business skills visa programme with an initial four year visa (stage one) which converts to permanent residence once you have owned and operated a farm in Australia for two years (stage two).
To qualify for a Sponsored Business Owner (Provisional) visa (Subclass 163) you must meet the following requirements:
- you have sufficient funds to relocate to Australia and purchase a business;
- you have a successful business background;
- for 2 of the past 4 years your farm business in your home country has had an annual turnover of at least A$300,000 or you have a continuous employment record as a senior manager in a qualifying business for the past 4 years; and
- you have been sponsored by a State Government.
If you wish to settle and farm in Tasmania and have made a research visit to confirm your intention to migrate you are eligible for Tasmanian Government sponsorship.
